Trend spotting: Organic textures

Sustainability has been a key factor in design across all sectors for a while now. As a consumer we find small pleasures in purchasing items that can also help our green planet too. We have seen a slow rise in ethically sourced and eco friendly items since mid 2019 but it’s never been more prominent across our favourite high street stores. Everyone from Zara Home to The White Company, even appearing in Sainsburys Home.

Here are some of the key textures that are quickly gaining popularity that you need to know about;

The Boho style staple has made its way in to stores, EVERYWHERE. You can find the material on furniture, decor and even lighting. Rattan instantly warms up a room and can fit within a variety of styles now. If your style is Scandi then consider a rattan stool or bench for the bedroom or living space. If you lean towards contemporary, add some baskets under a console table or in a kitchen area to hold bread/fruit, it will give a nice juxtaposition to the metal features usually found in these rooms. For a rustic space you could consider a furniture item in the dining or living that has rattan inserts. Whatever you decide, it’s definitely a staple that I don’t see going anywhere soon.

Linen seems to find its way to the fore-front of design during the hotter months. It’s lightweight nature and breathable qualities means its great for blankets and bedding when you want covering but don’t want to overheat. The downside to linen, depending how you look at it, is that it can crease very easily. I personally love that lived in look but some try to spend ages getting linen smooth like polyester blends but it’s just doesn’t work that way. Linen that is grown sustainably can be expensive but think of it as an investment piece. Purchasing in flax and raw colours mean that you can re-use it over and over again, more for your money. We are now seeing moves from just bedding into kitchen/dining accessories and curtains. If you lean to a farmhouse or rustic aesthetic then you’ll want to incorporate this material somewhere in your home. However, modern homes with industrial and mid-mod vibes are now seeing a rise in using linen furniture as a softer approach to a lived in space.

As we are all getting into the habit of recycling at home, so are the stores when sourcing materials! Everything from plastic bottles turned bedding, to cotton turned blankets. Well, glass turned decor is taking over. The soothing green hues that come with recycled glass tap into the Dulux colour of the year (Tranquil Dawn) and we could all use a little more zen in our homes. Some of my favourite pieces i’ve come across are large organic shaped vases, they can be used all on their own or as a table centrepiece filled with your favourite blooms. Recycled glass can really be incorporated into any style, essentially wherever you would normally put glassware, you could swap out for this. The best thing about it is you’re helping the environment a little too, what a great feeling!

Stoneware is made from the earth and in essence can be returned once it’s been used. However, not in a conventional way but it makes for great drainage for all your houseplants! Stoneware is durable and creates beautiful decor, that’s why it’s dominating every part of our homes, no matter what your style preference. Dining on an organically shaped set has never felt so appealing. You’ll probably splurge on the set but it’s worth it. For the most part this material can withstand heat and would be microwave, oven and dishwasher safe. Not only does it look good but it’s practical! Naturally, this means the prominence of this material is huge in the kitchen areas but it doesn’t stop there by any means. I have found; vases, bathroom accessories, jars and candle holders. These accessories are appealing as they are more attainable in price compared to a full dining set if you wanted the feel without setting you back.
